Year-end tax planning for real estate investors
Year-end tax planning for real estate investors
With Mark Canton, Partner, Hunt Jackson CPAs
Now is the time of year when investors should review their tax situation for the year in order to make any necessary changes by year-end. Adding to the significance this year is the new tax changes passed by Congress in December.
Topics covered:
-Estimating your year-end taxes, and methods to reduce or defer that amount.
-Rentals – Depreciation changes and cost segregation – A huge incentive to make certain improvements to property! In some cases this can be like getting 1/3 of the cost back in the same year!
-Flips and other active businesses (even if not related to real estate) – Many pass-through entities are now eligible for 20% deduction on their income! That’s like a $7,000 refund on $100,000 of income. We will go over what does and does not apply.
-Personal residences – Major changes to itemized deductions will result in only 4% of people expected to itemize in 2018, as opposed to 30% in 2017. There are new limitations on mortgage interest expense, property taxes, and HELOCs on your personal residence as well as other changes.
